Bible Missionary Baptist Church of Portland, OR.
Church History
During the first half of the century, the city of Portland had a
true church of the Lord Jesus Christ in southeast Portland named
the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. After World War II
conventionism began to manifest itself in that church. There were
staunch men of the faith who spoke out against the movement but
to no avail.
One of these men, Elder Ole N. Opsund was the
missionary pastor of the East Side Mission in North Portland. On
November 6, 1946 a meeting was held with Elder Opsund, Sister
Pearl Opsund his wife; Elder John Blalock, Sister Mary his wife;
Sister Prudence T. Pushee and her son Brother Marvin Pushee
agreeing together to go into the organization of a new church.
On November 23, 1946 this church was organized with a council
composed of Elder Howard C. Peyton, council moderator, Brother A.
D. Lester, Brother Orville Harritt, Elder Arthur D. Vaughn, Elder
Donn Powell, Elder Ole N. Opsund, Elder J. W. Black, Elder Don
Allen, Elder Roland H. Leighton, Elder John R. Blalock,
missionary of the sponsoring church (San Pablo Gardens Missionary
Baptist Church, Richmond, CA.), Elder J. E. Took and Elder W. A.
Heard.
The charter members were:
Elder Ole N. Opsund, Church moderator.
Sister Pearl Opsund.
Elder John R. Blalock.
Sister Mary Blalock.
Sister Prudence T. Pushee.
Brother Marvin Pushee.
Elder J. E. Took.
Sister J. E. Took.
The council met at Elder Opsunds house, 966 N. Margin St.,
Portland, OR. This was at the southeast corner of N. Margin and
N. Clackamas Sts. and overlooked the Willamette River (The Red
Lion Inn across from the Rose Garden is there now). The church
services were first held there.
The church name was adopted December 1, 1946. Elder Ole N. Opsund
became the first Pastor January 12, 1947 at which time Sister
Bertha Symons came before the church to join on the promise of a
letter. She was the churchs first new member.
On March 5, 1947 the church voted to have Elder
John R. Blalock as it's home and foreign Missionary (the
churchs first) Elder and Sister Blalock lettered out of the
church to organize the Klamath Falls Missionary Baptist church
March 14, 1948.
January 25, 1948 was a day of double blessing from the Lord:
First, The church had its first Deacon when Brother Roland
E. Spotts along with his wife Sister Helen A. Spotts joined the
church by letter. He remained a faithful servant of the Lord
until his death on April 12, 1980. Second, The announcement was
made that the church has purchased a lot at S E 108th and
Burnside St. for seven hundred dollars ($700) for a church
building to be built. The construction was started soon afterward
and the first services were held in the basement August 11, 1948
when Elder Howard C. Peyton held revival services. Because the
church chose not to go into debt in the building of the church
building, construction was not completed until mid 1955.
Elder Cecil E. Fox was our second Pastor from August 6, 1950 to
April 7, 1951, after which Elder Opsund again became Pastor until
April 5, 1955. When a young man, Brother Cornelius (Neil) Fenison
was called as Pastor and ordained by our church June 26, 1955.
Elder Fenison continued as Pastor until September 4, 1957.
During this time (May 4, 1955) Elder Opsund was voted as the
church Missionary.
Elder Opsund was voted as the supply Pastor from September 4,
1957 until Elder Daniel T. Robbins was called as Pastor July 1,
1962. Elder Robbins was Pastor until April 17, 1963.
Elder Opsund was acting Pastor from April 17, 1963 until October
25, 1964. During that time the church authorized the organization
of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Portland, OR. on
September 7, 1963. The church had seven charter members and met
in a on S.E. Stark St.
Also during this time the second Deacon, Brother Weldon L.
Biller, his wife Madeline and three of their children lettered
into the church on February 3, 1964.
Elder Eugene B. Barrow became Pastor, October 25, 1964 and
continued until the Lord took him home February 10, 1979. When
Elder Barrow was Pastor, the Lord called church member Elder Dale
Myers to the missions field and was encouraged by Elder Barrow.
The Lord called him to the Philippine Islands to help a
missionary who was starting a Bible institute for Philipino men
who were to be trained as leaders in the native churches.
The church sponsored Elder Myers as Missionary to the Philippines
March 31, 1974.
After being on deputation Elder Myers and his family flew to the
island of Bohol where he taught and ministered to the Lords
church in the town of Alicia and worked with many mission points
on the island.
The Lord brought him back to Portland when the Alicia church was
strong enough to serve the Lord on March 2, 1978.
Elder Myers helped supply in the pulpit after Elder Barrow passed
away.
Elder Delbert C. Brown, Sr. was called as Pastor December 9, 1979
and continued until May 29, 1985. Many changes and blessings were
brought about during this time.
Elder Myers in 1981 was called to the Seattle area where the
Grace Mission was organized March 4, 1981. On May 26, 1982 this
mission was organized into the Mission of Grace Baptist Church
with seventeen (17) charter members.
Brother Dale Carothers was the churchs third Deacon when he
was ordained July 12, 1980 with his wife Sister Shirley and
family present. Here he still serves faithfully today as an
example and an inspiration to each of the members.
The church had some building improvements with new lights,
electric heaters, church pews and an electric organ.
From 1985 until 1990 the church pulpit was vacant. The Lord had
Elder Dale Myers, Elder John Blalock, many missionaries and
pastors fill the pulpit as the church endeavored to serve
the Lord.
On May 20, 1990 a young man again was called to be Pastor.
Brother Clyde S. Jones from the Cloverdale Baptist Church began
his first pastorate and was ordained by this church September 10,
1994. He is our current Pastor.
Another young man, Brother Benjamin M. Carothers was given a
license as a Preacher of the Gospel October 3, 1990.
In the past fifty years, this church has been blessed with seven
Pastors, three Deacons and three Missionaries. The word of God
has been preached in faith and truth. Many souls have been saved
and the lives of many have been blessed as God has added to the
church.
